Sean Thackrey is one of California’s most iconic and eccentric wine personalities, making wine in open-top fermenters in Bolinas near a eucalyptus grove (it’s unclear if the leaves fall into the fermenters, but each of his wines have an herbal eucalyptus note). Thackrey crafts the Pleiades based on what’s available to him - version XXXI is said to be heavy on the Sangiovese, lending the wine more dried cherry and fig notes than usual, while the addition of Viognier brings gorgeous floral aromatics. It’s full of hibiscus, anise and eucalyptus flavors along with plush fruit. Kinda weird, totally delicious.
