Oh Matthiasson... how to summarize a producer who has been so necessary and prevalent in the modern California wine making scene in a short blurb? We'll say this: even if a vintage as challenging as 2020 was, Steve made wine that is so pure and fresh and varietally accurate that it, like so many of his other bottlings, will go down in history. This appelation bottle blends three AVAs: Coombsville for structure and black fruit, Rutherford for savory Cabernet characters and bright fruit, and Oak Knoll for soft fruit. It is a Napa Cab of the old school, a blended wine, age-worthy, complex, and begging for a steak off of the grill or prime rib slathered in horseradish.
