If you aren’t familiar with the wines from Domaine Roland Schmitt that is probably because they sell so well in Alsace (the region with the most Michelin stars in France!) that the family has no need to export them. We are grateful our friends at Beaune imports BEGGED them for a little bit of wine for the California market. In the far northern part of the Bas Rhin (or lower Rhine) an area chalk full of Grand Cru sites, the Schmitt family farms their organic vineyards by hand. Bergbieten produces some of the most remarkable wines in all of Alsace. Add a family with deep generational knowledge of the land and traditional fermentation methods and voila! Graceful, earthy Pinot Noir.
