My sister moved to Portland in the late 1990s and ever since I've always loved the yearly family summer road trip up north to visit. Oregon always felt wild and wooded, beautiful forests to hike in, expansive beaches to walk along and Mt. Hood to wander up. And Portland was full of biking around town, catching a Thorns game and getting lost in Powell's.As I got older, wine became a much bigger part of the Portland visits. One of the first spots that really opened my mind to the new wave of Oregon wines was visiting the Southeast Wine Collective, founded in 2012 by Division Wines. In this tiny space in the Division-Clinton neighborhood, 10 awesome wineries made wines as a collective and hosted a lovely tasting room (featuring Oregon and international wines) to boot. Tasting the Division wines was stunning--soulful, delicious wines and where I first fell in love with Oregon Gamay.
Kate Norris and Thomas Monroe are co-owner/winemakers of Division, and cut their teeth learning winemaking and viticulture in the Loire, Beaujolais, Burgundy and the Northern Rhone. Their wines are unapologetically from the Pacific Northwest, yet French inspired: balanced & low in alcohol, made with minimal intervention and focused on organic and biodynamic farming. Though the collective closed last year, Kate and Thomas are just about to open their new winery space in SE Portland!Come meet winemaker/owner Kate Norris at Vintage Berkeley for a tasting of some of our favorite Oregon wines--from Gamay and Pinot Noir to bubbles, rose, Chardonnay and more!
