This week at Vine Street, it's a tale of 2 Chiles. A story of two winemakers, representing one of the most exciting frontiers of natural winemaking in the shop.
.
A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON OLD-SCHOOL CHILE
One story tells the tale of culture, tradition, and history of Chile - represented by the native País varietal (a.k.a. the Mission grape here in California). Roberto Henríquez is a first-generation winemaker - classically trained in agronomy and enology at the University of Concepción. He farms his own País vines organically and biodynamically and is vastly connected to the Chilean terroir. He follows the traditional Pipeño methods of the original winemakers of Chile, and works with some of the oldest (like 200 years old!!) vineyards in Chile. With vines stretching two centuries deep into soils of mixed volcanic and red clay, there's layers of flavor here unlike any wine you've likely ever tried.
OLD-SCHOOL WINEMAKING FAMILY TAKES A FRESH SPIN
Active in Chilean agriculture, grape growing and winemaking since 1740, the Echeverria family established their current vineyards and winery in 1923 in the outskirts of Molina, a town in the Curicó Valley. Here, they grow grapes from French pre-phylloxera rootstocks, on their 80 ha of vineyards. The winery was originally formed to produce bulk wines, but moved away from this in the 1990s to focus more on quality, forming one of the first small production, organic, botique wineries in Chile. Seeing and tasting their wines now, you'd never guess they came from a winery with such deep roots - they're so fresh and vibrant, and featuring grapes you'd never expect to see in Chile (Viognier?! Chillable Cab Franc?! Skin Contact Chardonnay?!) ... This family has reinvented themselves and we are loving this spin!
Come taste through two takes on Chile - where the new is old and the old is new again!
