Sometimes everyday drinking Chianti can feel like a thing of the past as prices of good Classicos inch up above $25. The hills around Siena are still loaded with value, though, and Salcheto’s is an almost impossibly freakish bargain. Biodynamically farmed vineyards, made in an uber-eco, carbon-negative winery... for $15? It reminds me of the stuff that you drink by the carafe in Siena: lively red fruit, a little licorice, food friendly acidity, juicy, and highly drinkable. Unlike the modernized Cab-infused versions that seem beefed up, this is the real deal traditional stuff. Serve it up cool in a carafe with pizza.
