Turkey is known for many things: Hagia Sophia, great food, public baths, a rich and diverse culture, and the list goes on. But Turkish wine? Somewhat less recognized than its Grand Bazaar and historical sites. And while the Turkish wine scene has been rapidly developing since the mid-90s due to increased private investment and a general enthusiasm for wines coming out of the many different regions, it's a tradition that's existed for millennia before that (we're talking 7000 years, all the way back to the Neolithic Stone Age).
.
Turkey's lack of representation on the modern wine stage (especially relative to its long history of winemaking) is certainly more of a confirmation of the industry's Western European and North American bias than a commentary on the quality of the wines coming out of the region. For Burak Özkan and Doruk Özkan, the brother's behind Likya Winery, the microclimate and terroir that surround the historic town of Antalya on Turkey's southern coast presented the perfect opportunity to coax balance and complexity from their vines - planted to a mix of native (kalecikkarası, öküzgözü and boğazkere) and international varieties (Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and more). The vineyards benefit from their high elevation and the protection of the western Taurus Mountains, as well as their proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, imbuing in the wines a pronounced finesse, elegance, and freshness. Simply put? These are stunning wines from exceptional vineyards, and more than worthy of a spotlight on a global stage.
.
We’ll be pouring a full range of Turkish delights: white, rosé, and reds, including their flagship red blend Opramoas, which marries Bordeaux varieties and Turkey's native grapes.
