Named after the Latin phrase Campania felix—which literally translates to "happy place"—Campania has truly been a happy place for wine since 1200 BC. It's a gorgeous coastal region of Italy (think season 2 of White Lotus but on the mainland), and the wines might even be better than the scenery. They're meant to go with Campanian cuisine: a cornucopia of flavors. Meats and mature cheeses come from the mountains, mozzarella hails from the coastal plains, while all of the fish delicacies come, of course, from the sea.
This is a tasting that truly represents the region, with five unique wines from the portfolio of Oliver McCrum. We'll start with a sparkling Fiano that's deep and savory with hints of orchard fruit and verdant herbs. Next we'll try a still version of Fiano (known to the Romans as vitis apiana, or "vine of the bees"). The best versions of Fiano have an unmistakable piney quality; this one certainly does. Greco will be third, a well-structured and age-worthy wine with vibrant acidity and a slightly bitter finish (a telltale sign that Greco is in your glass). On to the Falanghina. This wine, too, sings with salinity—we hope you’re picking up on the theme of salty whites here!—but is rounded out by stone fruits and a hint of florality. Finally, we'll finish with a local red variety called Piedirosso, think savory dried cherry with a spicy kick.
