Portuguese wines and Port are fascinating due to their rich history and unique grape varieties. Portugal boasts over 250 indigenous grape varieties, offering flavors and profiles that can’t be found anywhere else.
Port, a fortified wine originating from the Douro Valley, stands out as a symbol of Portuguese winemaking. It combines intense sweetness and bold flavors with aging potential that can span decades. The intricate process of producing Port, from foot-treading grapes in granite lagares to blending and aging in barrels, reflects centuries of tradition and craftsmanship.
Portuguese wines are remarkable for their quality-to-value ratio, making them a hidden gem in the wine world. We'll be tasting a white and a red from Rocim, a Portuguese winemaker know for Preservation of Indigenous Grapes and amphora winemaking techniques. Mono C by Luís Seabra (one of Portugal's most talented winemakers) will be next. This is an exceptional wine that reflects his dedication to showcasing the unique characteristics of Portuguese terroir. Finally we will try the 2 main types of Port, Ruby and Tawny from Portugal's oldest Port wine house, Kopke, founded in 1638 by the German merchant Christiano Kopke.
