We're running out of ways to say it, but here it goes again: Hungary is the most exciting wine producing country on the planet ("Magyarország készíti a világ legizgalmasabb borát" for the Uralic linguists out there). From its vastly varied terroir to its involvement in some of history's most significant events, Hungary is too meaningful to ignore. But two world wars, communist rule, and ensuing economic and political chaos have cast a long, unfortunate shadow over the proud tradition of exceptional wines in the country.
.
Luckily, the last two decades have seen a community of winemakers working diligently to restore old vineyards to their former glory, highlighting the beauty of the country's terroir and native varieties. And within that community, few have been more impactful than the women winemakers whose wines our friends at Danch & Granger have been working with for years: Dorka Homoky and Judit Bodó represent a dynamic new generation in Tokaj, following in the iconic footsteps of organic pioneer Sarolta Bárdos of Tokaj Nobilis; in the abandoned cellar village just outside of Hajós, Petra Sziegl and her oenologist husband Balázs are quietly making some of the most scintillating wine in Europe, and in the process, rescuing and rehabilitating ancient rootstock from all across the former Austro-Hungarian empire; and Annamária Réka Koncz, though soft-spoken and careful with her words, is turning heads the world over with her powerful, stunning wines, all crafted in her hometown near the Ukrainian border in eastern Hungary, where she is the only commercial (and certainly exported) producer in a once highly regarded but currently forgotten region.
.
This Friday, we'll be pouring wines from all 4 of these incredible women, including the recently released (and highly limited) réka.koncz wines with our friend Brian Stapleton of Danch & Granger. After tasting the lineup, you'll have no trouble understanding why we're so obsessed with Hungarian wine (and you'll likely have a new obsession of your own, too)!
